Hon har inspirerat tonsättare i århundraden – Sankta Cecilia, musikens skyddshelgon och symbol för den gnista som väcker tonen till liv. Runt henne har myter, legender och toner vävts samman till en berättelse om musikens helighet, kraft och tröst. Varje år den 22 november firas hennes minne, och i denna konsert klingar lovsången till henne i både stillsam vördnad och jublande intensitet.
Benjamin Brittens Hymn to St Cecilia, skriven till W. H. Audens poetiskt laddade text, är ett av 1900 talets mest centrala a cappellaverk och har blivit ett självklart riktmärke i den engelska körrepertoaren. Här förenas personlig bekännelse, traditionen av lovsånger till Cecilia och en bländande körsats till en musikalisk ikon över musikens eget skyddshelgon. Agneta Sköld och Cecilia McDowall fångar i The Divine Cecilia och A Song for St Cecilia en rytmisk glädje och ett melodiskt ljus.
I programmets andra halva leder Judith Binghams Missa brevis II – The Road to Emmaeus lyssnaren genom påskberättelsens vandring: från lärjungarnas vilsenhet på vägen, via Kyries rastlösa bön och Gloriats jublande lovsång, till igenkännandets stilla klarhet när Kristus bryter brödet. Med sin dramatiska form och prisbelönta liturgiska skärpa blir mässan en samtida spegel av tron – och en stark påminnelse om musikens kraft att öppna ögon och hjärtan.

Around her, myths, legends and tones have been woven together into a story of music's holiness, power and consolation. Her memory is celebrated every year on 22 November, and in this concert the song of praise to her rings out in both quiet reverence and jubilant intensity.
Benjamin Britten's Hymn to St Cecilia, written to W. H. Auden's poetically charged text, is one of the most central a cappella works of the twentieth century and has become a touchstone of the English choral repertoire. Here personal confession, the tradition of odes to Cecilia and a dazzling choral writing unite in a musical icon of music's own patron saint. Agneta Sköld and Cecilia McDowall capture in The Divine Cecilia and A Song for St Cecilia a rhythmic joy and melodic brightness.
In the second half of the programme, Judith Bingham's Missa brevis II – The Road to Emmaus leads the listener through the Easter narrative's journey: from the disciples' bewilderment on the road, through the restless prayer of the Kyrie and the jubilant praise of the Gloria, to the quiet clarity of recognition as Christ breaks the bread. With its dramatic form and prize-winning liturgical sharpness, the mass becomes a contemporary mirror of faith – and a powerful reminder of music's capacity to open both eyes and hearts.
